Umar Bachiyev, an ex-member of an illegal armed formation, has been sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment for banditry, terrorism and attacks on police officers, ITAR-TASS reports.
Bachiyev joined the formation in mid-2004. It consisted of up to 40 people and operated in the Itum-Kalinsky District of Chechnya. The illegal group had explosives, ammunition and weapons. Bachiyev and other members of the group attacked the house of the head of the village of Gukhoy in September 2007. The house was used as a police station of the Itum-Kalinsky District and the village’s administration. A police officer was killed, the building and two cars were burned down. The village head’s relatives were tortured.
The militants attacked police officers occupying a high school. Under-barrel grenade launchers were used. A diesel generator was fused with a bomb. Six officers and a local civilian were injured.
