Russia is marking the 300th anniversary of the State Flag. The flag was adopted by Peter the Great, who personally designed the flag. It was used almost solely on the fleet in the 19th century and was used on the ground when Russian sailors started discovering new lands. In 1896 the three-coloured flag was adopted as the state flag: red implying great power statehood, blue as the colour of the Holy Mother, white as the colour of freedom and independence.
The three-coloured flag replaced the Soviet flag when it was raised over the parliament in Moscow on August 22, 1991. State Flag Day was established by the president on August 20, 1994.
The WCIOM polling center said that 54-58% of people questioned were proud of the flag, 24-28% considered it pleasant, 14-17% expressed indifference.
A concert will be organized at Victory Park on Poklonnaya Hill. A demonstration by the movement For Human Rights will be organized from Druzhinnikov Street to the crossing of Novy Arbat and the Garden Ring.
The Young Guards of United Russia will organize an art festival with musical performances, master classes and performances. The festival will be organized opposite TsUM.
