A shipment of 3 tons of liquid heroin concealed as liquid soup was intercepted in Georgia on its way to Moldova through Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Georgia on July 12, 2014. The portion consisted of 93 barrels of 80% heroin weighing 2.79 tons worth $93 million.
Three people (one Turk, two Georgians) were detained in the economic forming zone of Batumi of the customs department of the income service, on the 106th kilometer of the Senaki-Poti-Sarpi road.
Georgian Interior Minister Alexander Chikaidze said earlier that the shipment belonged to the Taliban Movement. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev took the transit case under personal control. The amount is unprecedented for Georgia.
