On September 4th 1999, a blast of 2700kg of explosives happened in a 5-storey house in Buynaksk, killing 62 people, including 23 children. 146 people were injured. Another bomb weighing 2.5 tons of explosives was defused 15 minutes after the first blast. September 4 is also the day when international gangs in Dagestan were destroyed. A commemoration was organized in Buynaksk. Speaker of the Dagestani Parliament Khizri Shikhsayidov, the head of “Buynaksk City” Guseyn Gamztov, Administration head Zairbek Valiyev, Buynaksk prosecutor Omar Omarov, victims of the tragedy and activists of public organizations have taken part in this year’s ceremony.
Dagestani Leader Ramazan Abdulatipov reminded that a 9-storey house had exploded in 1996, resulting in 67 people dead. 39 people survived. Over 40 died and over 100 were injured in a blast in Kaspiysk on May 9, 2002.
Shikhsayidov noted that the blast consolidated the republic for a real war with terrorism. He reminded that the republic survived through tragic days in Kizlyar and Pervomaysk, blasts in Kaspiysk, Makhachkala and Buynaksk, unconstitutional events in May 1998, intervention of militants from Chechnya in the Botlikhsky and Novolaksky districts in August-September 1999.
