Armenia is aging rapidly

Armenia could be among the "growing-old" countries soon. Such an opinion was expressed by the executive representative of the Yerevan office of the UN Population Fund, Garik Ayrapetyan, on October 1 during a meeting with journalists, speaking about the International Day of the Elderly. "Today the number of Armenians over 60 years old amounts to 13% of the total population, meaning that Armenia is at the top line of the growing-old nations and is already approaching the old countries. If nothing changes, in 2050 one third of our population will consist of individuals older than 65 years. The fall in the birthrate after the declaration of independence of Armenia became the reason for the doubling of the aging of the population of Armenia, we will soon see the consequences of it," Garik Ayrapetyan explained.
