Azerbaijan needs $620 million to strengthen river banks

The ‘Irrigation and Water Economy of Azerbaijan’ company has requested
the government to provide funds to prevent landslides, Trend reports,
citing the first deputy chairman of the company, Mamedsadykh Guliyev.

He said that they need $620 million to strengthen the banks of the
Araz and Kura rivers, though they understand that such a sum is
impossible to provide. Reinforcement is needed on a territory of over
1.4 million km .

The company is completing works on 50 km using its own funds. They are
restoring the river banks of the Kura river on the territories of
Sabirabad, Salyan, Neftchaly and Saatly, where the risk of landslides
is especially high.

They expect state aid and foreign credits for the work, Guliyev said.
This year the Kura flooded in 40 areas. 20,000 houses were submerged,
over 300 were destroyed, 2,000 are in bad condition and over 50,000
hectares of agricultural land and pastures were submerged.
