Traditionally, figures of culture, art, sport and politics are given awards for their achievements on this day. Criminals often get amnesty. The last amnesty happened in July 2014, when over a thousand people were released from prison. A military parade started on the central square of Ashkhabad.

Turkmen students of the Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering marked Independence Day. The Vatan National and Cultural Autonomy of Saint Petersburg, the Arkadag Council of Turkmen Students, the rectorial staff of the University and the Turkmen embassy in Russia organized special events.
The Council of Communities and the Faculty of International Relations and Management of International Contacts of the Belarusian State University marked the Independence Day of Turkmenistan for the first time. Members of the Turkmen embassy in Belarus, Turkmen students, teachers and staff of the Belarusian State University took part in the event aimed at popularizing culture, politics and science. Presentations of history and modern development of Turkmenistan were organized.
A concert of folk songs and dances and a presentation of national Turkmen cuisine concluded the celebrations.
About 3,000 foreign students, 800 of them from Turkmenistan, study at the Belarusian State University.
