Participant in August Coup Gennady Yanayev dies

Gennady Yanayev, Soviet politician, former Vice-President of the USSR
and participant in the August Coup of 1991, died this Friday in a
Moscow hospital, a family friend told RIA Novosti.


Yanayev was born in 1937 and became the USSR's vice-president in 1990.
He had political differences with Mikhail Gorbachov and joined the
coup, which attempted to take power in 1991.


Yanayev was jailed until the pardoning in 1994 of the initiators of
the coup in August 1991 and September-October 1993. According to
media, Yanayev worked on a consultative committee for veterans and
disabled civil servants and headed the history and international
relations department of the Russian International Academy of Tourism.
