Crimea’s residents are first to get electronic passports

The FMS of the Russian Federation is beginning issuing electronic passports in Russia from the start of 2015. Residents of Crimea, Sevastopol and Rostov-on-Don will be the first citizens to be issued the new main identity document.

In all other regions electronic passports will be issued from 2017. By 2025 it is planned to substitute paper passports completely with their electronic variants.

The new passport will be issued once every 10 years. A plastic card will contain basic information about its owner – name, DOB, and so on.
