Ashton Carter, possibly the next US secretary of defense, did not hesitate to declare that he sees the solution of issues related to Ukraine, the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base or sending troops to Iraq any differently from the President.
Carter's statements were so resonant that even the White House had to intervene. The head of the presidential administration said that the President still takes such strategic decisions, not the head of the Pentagon.
Carter was nominated to become Obama’s defence secretary on Wednesday.
