Majority of Vesti FM audience approves declaration of Baku as Hero City

The topic of the Questions of the Day broadcast of Vesti FM today was the request of Vice Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament Ziyafet Askerov to declare Baku a Hero City. He believes that the world should recognize Azerbaijani oil workers and Baku oil as contributors to the victory in the Great Patriotic War. Giorgi Saralidze and Yelena Shchedrunova, hosting the broadcast, discussed promotion of countries and cities for their contribution to achieving the victory.

Saralidze noted that nationalist Stepan Bandera had become a hero in Ukraine after the fall of the USSR. In his words, such propagandists should not be allowed to interpret history.

Concerning Baku, the hosts reminded that many cities had made a sufficient contribution to victory. Baku, for instance, was extracting oil to fuel tanks and aircraft. Some cities accommodated the population evacuated from the frontline, others were settled in Tashkent, Almaty and Ural cities. Saralidze added that the Great Victory was an achievement of all nationalities of the Soviet Union. He said that the most heroes per capita were among Ossetians. About 10% of the Georgian population died in the war. Considering that Georgia was not heavily bombed or attacked, the 10% died on the frontline.
