Chinese human rights activist awarded Nobel Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Chinese human rights
activist Liu Xiaobo for long non-violent fight for fundamental human
rights in China, RIA Novosti reports, citing the Nobel Prize Committee
in Norway.


The Nobel Prize for Peace is one of the 5 awards founded by the
Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel. The award ceremony is held
annually on December 10 in Oslo.


The prize in 2010 is worth 1 million euro.


The new laureate was jailed last year for 11 years for drafting
Charter 08, an open letter to the Chinese authorities calling for
democratic reform.


He also took part in the Tianamen Square protests in 1989.
