The head of Germany's Interior Ministry, Thomas de Maiziere, said that the ministry has data on almost 650 radical Islamists fighting for Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.
According to him, the ministry has information on over 1000 individuals who could pose a potential threat to national security.
In 2014 de Maiziere announced the decision to deprive radical Islamists who have fought in conflict zones of their IDs, as the authorities fear the radicals may pose a terrorist threat on return to Germany.
