The Russian Defense Ministry has started awarding a new medal, the Medal of the Memory of the Heroes of the Fatherland. Women have become the first ones to receive the award, according to Colonel-General Victor Goremykin, the head of the Main Personnel Directorate of the Russian Defense Ministry, TASS reports.The medal was created by Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu. It is awarded for major achievements in military history and humanitarian sciences, realization of public historical and patriotic projects.Civilians, including foreigners, helping the Russian Defense Ministry will receive the medal too.Shoygu awarded the medal to Major-General Yelena Knyazeva, the head of the Military University, and Alina Pokrovskaya, Russian People’s Artist, the main actress of the Central Academic Theater of the Russian Army.
