Victory in the Great Patriotic War is now the basis of a common historical memory of the peoples of the former Soviet Union, the head of the Russia Today Center of International Journalism and Studies, Veronica Krasheninnikova, and Executive Director of the Political Science Center North-South Yulia Yakusheva told Vestnik Kavkaza following the International Conference 'The Great Victory Anniversary: living memory through the generations' in Baku.
As Veronica Krasheninnikova stressed, the significance of the victory in the Great Patriotic War is so great that almost a quarter of a century after the collapse of the USSR, it brings people together. "Thanks to it, we still see ourselves as part of a single civilization.The most important moment of victory over the most powerful military and ideological machine of the Third Reich was only possible because of the unity of all the people in the front, in the rear, in the country's political leadership and the military headquarters. There was no question about nationality, all together defended the fatherland," she said.
Yulia Yakusheva, in her turn, noted that 70 years after the Great Victory it becomes clear that its main asset and the lesson is friendship among peoples. "The victory was gained thanks to the heroism of the Soviet people. Now, when, on the one hand, we are gradually moving from the disintegration processes to the integration, on the other hand, we see attempts to sow discord between countries and people by historical falsifications, the preserving of the memory of the war for future generations is a major challenge of the current generation of historians, humanists, those people who are involved in the transmission of historical memory of youth," Yakusheva said.
