Extremism on the rise in Russia

Russian prosecutor General Yuri Chaika says in his annual report that the number of extremism-related crimes in the country has gone up in the last 10 years: 130 crimes in 2004, 896 in 2013, 1024 in 2014, TASS reports.

Most extremist crimes in 2014 happened in the Central (241), Volga (199) and the Northwestern federal districts. The situation is a result of changes in the qualification of crimes as extremist and improvement of police efficiency.

The highest growth in the criminal rate concerns urges for extremism (by 25.9% to 180) and incitement of hatred and humiliation (by 19.5% to 588). The two types of crimes make up 75% of all extremism-related crimes.
