Georgia celebrates Armed Forces Day

Today the Georgian army marks its 24th anniversary. This day will be celebrated with solemn events. In the morning Defence Minister Mindia Janelidze and the Chief of General Staff, Major General Vakhtang Kapanadze, will address military personnel and award successful servicemen.

 

The Defence Minister and the Chief of the General Staff will meet family members of fallen heroes at the Shindisi Memorial. A concert will end the solemn events.Open Doors days will be held in military bases all over Georgia.  Family members of military servicemen will congratulate the soldiers, view demonstrations of technique and become acquainted with their working environment.In December 1990 the Georgian National Guard was established on the resolution of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Georgia. On April 24, 1991 the Cabinet of Ministers of Georgia issued a decree to recruit youth for compulsory military service. Conscription to the army officially launched on April 30, 1991.
