US Navy ships will accompany all US-flagged cargo vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, CNN reports.
According to CNN, the classified plan was approved by the Pentagon.
The need for such measures is "due to the uncertainty around Iran's intentions."
Two days earlier, Iranian patrol boats detained the Maersk Tigris containership in the Strait of Hormuz, sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands. Tehran insists that the incident did not have any political agenda. According to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, the company owning the ship about 15 years ago "evaded paying for or delivering a cargo," so the court decided to detain it until the compensation is paid, TASS reports.
