Terrorist attack prevented in Astrakhan

The police have discovered a criminal group planning terrorist attacks in Astrakhan, RIA Novosti reports, citing the National Counter-Terrorism Committee.


The police found the group's trail after investigations in July-August 2010 in Astrakhan. There had been attacks on police, with 2 police officers killed and 6 wounded. The assailants stole police weapons and a radio. Two suspects were later detained. On October 18 the police received information about so-called Gayni Zhumagaziyev, who was on the wanted list. He was surrounded in a private house in Astrakhan.


Zhumagaziyev opened fire and was eliminated. At the time of his death he had a belt with two grenades, a knife and a magazine for automatic weapons, as well as a submachine gun and two pistols stolen from the police. 8 people were later detained. 2 other suspects are on the wanted list, the National Counter-Terrorism Committee said.
