UN Security Council demands attackers on Russian Embassy in Damascus be punished

The UN Security Council has condemned the attack on the Russian Embassy in Damascus, stressing the need to bring the perpetrators to justice, Lithuania's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and the Security Council's President for May, Raimonda Murmokaite, said.

"Members of the Security Council condemned the serious terrorist attack which occurred on the Russian embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus, which caused serious damage to property," RIA Novosti reports.

"The members of the Council stressed the need to bring those responsible for this crime to justice," Muromkayte added.

In addition, all the members of the Security Council noted the fundamental principle of the 1961 Vienna Convention on the inviolability of diplomatic missions, and they reminded of the responsibilities of the host country "to take all necessary steps to ensure the protection of diplomatic and consular offices from possible interference and damage," as well as "to prevent an attack on a diplomatic mission."
