Sergey Sobyanin officially approved as Moscow mayor

The Moscow City Duma has approved Sergey Sobyanin as the mayor of Moscow at an unscheduled session. The Russian TV channel "Russia 24“ broadcast the session live. 32 deputies voted for his nomination and two against.


This evening the White Hall of the mayor's office will host the inauguration of Sobyanin. Gazeta.ru reported that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and the Patriarch of the Russian Church Kirill will be at the ceremony.


Sergey Sobyanin believes that the Moscow government has a well-formed administration, but it could have some young functionaries as well.  He said that there should be rotation. Sobyanin noted that it can be achieved by recruiting young staff.


Sergey Sobyanin believes that the main goal is the increase of Moscow's rate of development. He said that the capital has great potential built up in the last decade but the city was missing opportunities for development. There was an inefficient usage of resources, Sobyanin stated at the session of the Moscow City Duma.


Sergey Sobyanin was born on June 21, 1958 in Nyakcimvol village of Beryozovskiy region in Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous District. He left school 1975. He entered the mechanical department of the Technological Institute of Kostroma in 1975, graduating in 1980 as a specialist in engineering technology, metal-cutting engineering and instruments.In 1989 he graduated at the All-Union Law Institute, Ulyanovsk branch. He is a PhD in Law.


He started his carrier as an engineer at a wood waste processing factory in Kostroma in 1975. In 1982-1984 he was heading the Komsomol organizations department of Leninskiy regional committee in Chelyabinsk. In 1991 he was appointed the head of administration of Kogalym city. In 1994 he became a deputy of the district Duma of Khanty-Mansiysk and later its chairman. In 1996 he became a member of the Russian Federal Council.


In 2001 he was appointed as the governor of Tyumen region. In 2004 he became a member of the ruling United Russia party. In 2005 he became the head of the President's Administration.
