Iran’s Lake Urmia threatens Middle East with sandstorms

Lake Urmia in northwestern Iran is being turned into a hub of a dust storm in the Middle East, an official of Iran’s West Azerbaijan Province’s Environment Protection Organization, Hojjat Jabbari, said.

There are several hubs of dust storms in the Middle East, he said, adding that Lake Urmia is being turned into a new hub of a dust storm, Iran’s IRNA news agency reported on June 8.

The level of water has been declining since 1995 and the lake could be turned into a swamp within a few years.

Iranian president Hassan Rouhani set up a working group for saving Lake Urmia, which prepared a 9-year plan to restore the lake, Trend reports.
