Iran allows women to watch volleyball

A limited number of Iranian women will be allowed to watch Volleyball World League games in Tehran this month, Vice President for Women and Family Affairs, Shahindokht Molaverdi, said.

The government hopes to avoid a showdown with hard-liners over the issue, Associated Press notes.

Iranian women have been banned from games since 1979, though foreign women can attend matches of their national teams.
