Georgia establishes Union of Caucasian Peoples

Georgiahas established a social organization called the Union of
Caucasian Peoples, giving peoples of the region a chance to discuss
topical issues, an expert on Caucasian issues and member of the
organization Mamuka Areshidze said, News Georgia reports.


The foundation meeting of the organization was held in Tbilisi.
Russian, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Ossetian, Abkhaz, Avar, Vaynakh and
Cherkess peoples have already joined it. There are negotiations with
other peoples as well. The union is headed by Shio Arsenishvili.


Areshidze said that the goal is to have an organization for peoples of
the Caucasus to make speeches. He noted that to do that they need
active projects, such as the Court of Caucasian Peoples. The project
involves discussions of Caucasian problems – conflicts, tensions,
historical issues.


The Georgian authorities welcomed the initiative. The organization has
members opposed to any authorities, but a major interest in the
Caucasus unites everyone, Areshidze said.
