An additional vaccination programme for poliomyelitis has been
completed in the South and North Caucasian Federal Districts, the head
of Russian Federal Service for Consumer Rights Protection, Gennady
Onishenko, said on Friday, RIA Novosti reports.
He noted that 2.2 million children (99.3%) were vaccinated, 6,000
others were not vaccinated.
Vaccination was not conducted because some parents are sure about the
hazardous effects of the vaccination. Most refusals of vaccination are
in the Rostov Region and Kabardino-Balkaria. The second round of
vaccinations will start on December 3.
The federal service reported earlier that there were over 700 cases of
poliomyelitis registered in Tajikistan in 2010, 20 of which were
lethal. There were also cases registered in Turkmenistan.
