Ex-mufti of North Ossetia continues education in Saudi Arabia

The ex-mufti of North Ossetia, Ali-Khadji Yevteyev, who left his office after a scandalous interview to an internet media agency, has gone to Saudi Arabia to continue his education, RIA Novosti reports.

Yevteyev assumed the post of North Ossetian Muslim leader in 2008. However, he had to resign this year, after the North Caucasian Muslim community condemned an interview he gave as having nothing to do with true Islam and stirring up inter-religious and inter-ethnic hatred. In the interview Yevteyev abused Orthodox priests, expressed his endorsement of militant actions and declared that he is acquainted with gunmen leader Hattab. Later the ex-mufti claimed that his statements were ‘misinterpreted’.
