Russian president arrives in Baku for Caspian summit

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has arrived in Baku to take part in the third summit of the Caspian states, RIA Novosti reports.

At the summit the sides will discuss the legal status of the Caspian Sea, ecology, construction of Trans-Caspian pipelines and economic cooperation, the president's assistant Sergey Prikhodko said.

At the end of the summit, the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan will make a joint declaration and sign an agreement on security cooperation.

The first summit of the Caspian states was held in April 2002 in Ashkhabad, the second - in October 2007 in Tehran.

The Russian president is expected to have bilateral meetings in Baku. In particular, he will have talks with the president of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Kazakhstan's Nursultan Nazarbayev.
