Azerbaijani parliament to increase penalty for violating confession law

Azerbaijan plans to increase the penalty for violating the law on the freedom of confession for individuals six-fold, for officials 16-fold. The initiative was discussed by committee for human rights and legal policy and state construction of the parliament on Wednesday, head of the committee Ali Guseynli said.


The current penalties for individuals are 100-300 manats, for officials - 200-500 manats. The new bill will increase the penalties for individuals to 500-2000 manats and officials – 7000-8000 manats.


The bill will be viewed at a plenary session of the parliament.


The committee will also discuss supervision of the information issues by the Ombudsman.
