The new mayor of Yerevan will be elected on December 17. The decision
was made by the Council of Elders on Monday, News Armenia reports,
citing information on the website of the mayor“s office.
Mayor Gagik Beglaryan resigned after an incident last week, in which
he beat up a member of the protocol department of the presidential
administration of Armenia.
According to the law on the local autonomy of Yerevan, the mayor must
be elected within a month.
The party contingent of the Council of Elders of Yerevan proposes
candidates for the post.
Armenian media say that the most likely candidate to take the position
is Taron Markaryan, the acting mayor and former vice-mayor.
