Karen Karapetyan has been elected the new mayor of Yerevan. He was
previously the head of one of the largest Armenian companies, the
Armenian-Russian ArmRosgazprom, News Armenia reports, citing the
Public Television of Armenia.
Karapetyan was introduced by Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, leader
of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia.
The previous mayor Gagik Beglaryan resigned on December 8 after the
scandal of his beating up Aram Kandayan, member of the protocol
service of the presidential administration.
Karapetyan received 50 votes for and one against at the Council of Elders.
Karapetyan was born on August 14, 1963. He graduated at the department
of mathematics of the Armenian State University. He giving lessons at
the university.
He was the deputy head and then the head of Armenergo, deputy minister
of energy.
Since 2001, Karapetyan has been the head of ArmRosgazprom.
In March 2008, he was elected as Chief of the Board of Directors of Areximbank.
Karapetyan is a PhD in economy, author of 17 science works.
He has a wife and three children.
