Today is National Solidarity Day in Azerbaijan. Tens of millions of Azerbaijanis today live all over the world - in the Republic of Azerbaijan, in Iran (Southern Azerbaijan), Turkey, Germany, France, Great Britain, the USA and in the states of the Middle East. The largest Azerbaijani diaspora exists in Russia - some 2 million people.
The proclamation of Azerbaijan's independence triggered the growth of national self-conciousness and the need to communicate with compatriots abroad, so a National Solidarity Day of all Azerbaijanis was declared by the President in 1993.
Today, President Ilham Aliyev called on all Azerbaijani diasporas to promote their motherland's image in the eyes of the world community. He also stressed that Azerbaijanis who live abroad contribute greatly to the country's culture and politics, so the President granted his full assistance to the process of diaspora growth and consolidation.
