Approximately 600 families were evacuated overnight from the village of Velistsikh in the Gurdjaan municipality (Kakheti region, Eastern Georgia) due to a possible ecological threat. Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said the measures were necessary due to the damaged walls of a water storage unit in Cheremy village. If the water storage walls collapse the water may flood Velistsikh, Trend reports.
Minister of Internal Affairs Vano Merabishvili, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Goga Khachidlze and local authorities spent the whole night in the village. According to Khachidlze, there is a flooding and landslide threat.
“Our specialists are constantly monitoring the water level in the storage unit, if the rain continues then the ecological threat will be enough”, he noted. Police were helping evacuate people.
According to local sources, one woman died of heart failure during the operation. The area of possible ecological disaster remains calm.
