Unknown gunmen shot dead an ataman of the local Cossack community in Dagestan on Wednesday evening, a source in the law enforcement agencies told RIA Novosti on Thursday.
According to his information, the ataman, who was also head of the operational district gas service, was assaulted at 21.30 Moscow time in the settlement of Krasny Voskhod, situated in Kizlyar district.
"The unknown assailants fired from submachine guns at an Opel car. The ataman died of his injuries on the spot", said the source.
An inquiry is now underway.
