Persistent heavy rains lead to most of Azerbaijan's rivers breaking their banks

Persistent rain has caused flooding of the rivers of Azerbaijan, Trend reports citing the Azerbaijani Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.

High waters in the lower reaches of the river Kura caused water levels in Zardab, Sabirabad, Shirvan, Salyan and Saatlu to rise by a metre. The level of the rivers in the Guba-Hachmaz region is 150-266% that of the norm for the past 10 days, 90-170% in the Balakyan-Shekin region and 120-145 in Lyankaran-Astarin region.

In the rivers of the Lesser Caucasus, the high water is about 60-70% lower than the norm.

Heavy rains and snow in the Zardab and Guba regions have caused serious problems. "About 600 houses have been destroyed in Zardab, the basements of many buildings have been flooded. About 25 settlements on the Kura and the Garasu are flooded. About 2000 hectares of grain fields are under water. The most complicated situation is in the settlement of Alibeyli, where a bridge over the Garasu is threatened", report the authorities in the region.

Schools are temporarily closed in Zurdab district. On May 2nd it snowed in some highland settlements. 20 cm of snow fell in Hynalyg district. The highway from Zurdab to Hynalyg is closed.
