The situation in Azerbaijani flood zone stabilizes

After stabilization of the situation in the zone along the Kura river,
which was flooded, the extent of damage caused has been calculated,
Azerbaijani President Ilkham Aliyev said at a meeting on a visit to
Shirvan on May 11th, Turan reports.


State television showed Aliyev meeting refugees of submerged villages
and a detailed report on the results of the meeting in the tent camp.
Aliyev expressed his satisfaction with the rescue work carried out by
state agencies. Aliyev said that minimizing the repercussions of the
flood and saving people was a great achievement. He gave a positive
rating to the conditions in the tent camp.


Vice-Premier Abid Sharifov noted that water discharge on the Kura
river never usually exceeds 1800-1900 cubic metres per second, but
that in the flood zone it reached 2400 cubic metres. The total water
discharge was 90 million cubic metres of water.


According to the head of Azerenergy Etibar Pirverdiyev, approximately
120 million cubic metres were discharged, equaling the capacity of the
Yenikend water reservoir.
