The World Ice Hockey Championship will take place in Russia 2016, it was announced today at the Congress of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) held in Slovakia. Denmark and Ukraine recently withdrew from the competition to host the championship. The news was announced by the president of the International Ice Hockey Federation, Rene Fasel, RIA Novosti reports.
The Russian proposal suggests holding the world championship in Moscow and St. Petersburg from April 29 to May 15.
The president of the Russian Football Union (RFU), Sergei Fursenko, said that Russia's victory in the competition for the right to host the world hockey championship in 2016 is "a recognition of the special merit of the Russian hockey by the world community."
