The Azerbaijani Olympic team consists of 38 male and 14 female athletes for the games in 2012, 1news.az reports.
It is the largest team Azerbaijan has organized since becoming independent. Kenul Nurullayeva, Executive Director of the Organization Committee Baku-2020, noted that it is a historic benchmark for Azerbaijan and will help win the bids for hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020. Azerbaijani athletes performed successfully during the Soviet era. It participated in its first games as an independent state in Atlanta in 1996. Azerbaijan has won 16 medals in wrestling, shooting, boxing and judo. Azerbaijan won a gold medal, two silver and four bronze in 2008.
