The Azerbaijani mountaineering team of Sirkhan Mamedov (captain), Denis Leusov and Firuz Dadashov flew from Moscow to Dushanbe yesterday. Rufat Gojayev had to quit climbing the Peak of Lenin, only to rejoin the expedition on July 27.
They will climb the Peak of Korzhenevskaya (7105 m), the highest in Central Asia, and the Peak of Ismail Samoni (7495).
The President of the Azerbaijani Alpinist Federation, Israfil Asherly, told Vestnik Kavkaza that it is part of a joint project of the Azerbaijani Youth Organization of Russia, the Heydar Aliyev Fund and the Azerbaijani Alpinist Federation. It marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Mirza Fatali Akhundov and the 100th anniversary of the birth of Maestro Niyazi.
The Azerbaijani Ministry for Youth and Sports is supporting the expedition.
The mountaineers have visited the Azerbaijani embassy in Dushanbe.
