Russian team breaks Paralympics medal count record

Russian prodigy Alexander Pronkov led a Russian podium sweep in the 10km standing cross-country skiing race on the last day of the Sochi Paralympics on Sunday, RIA Novosti reports.

As a result, Russia has broken the standing overall medal count record for the Winter Paralympics, having won a total of 73 medals, three more than previous record holder Austria managed at the 1984 Innsbruck Games.

Pronkov, 16, trailed his more experienced opponents for most of the race, but a swift sprint at the finish brought him his first Paralympic gold.

Vladimir Kononov, 42, took the lead at the 2.5km mark but finished 0.8 seconds behind Pronkov to take silver. The bronze went to Vladislav Lekomtsev who grabbed his fourth medal of the Sochi Games, finishing 6.6 seconds behind the lead.
