Azerbaijan promises high security at European Games

Azerbaijan assures that the European Games set for June will be safe, despite the deaths of three people in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone last week. Spokesman of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Khikmet Hajiyev noted that the Games would be held over 400km from the conflict zone, Associated Press reports.

He added that both athletes and guests will enjoy a safe and peaceful atmosphere.

The Armenian Olympic Committee said in early March that it would take part in the European Games. Gagik Sarkisyan, the head of the Committee, clarified that the decision was bases only on sporting grounds, emphasizing the importance of separating sport from politics.
