Builders on the Alyat-Astara highway have discovered an ancient village near the village of Chukhanly in the Salyan district, the head of a department at the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences, Professor Arif Mamedov, said, Trend reports.
The village and its cemetery were built in medieval times. The graves were built from clay in the 1st to the 3rd centuries AD. Some of them were destroyed by the road construction activities.
Mamedov said that manuscripts of Strabon have information on minor villages along the River Kura, which had been suitable for navigation. The river was used for the Derbent-Ardebil trading route.
