The Caucasus is expected to go through a radical modernization of its
transportation system, including construction of new airports and
hubs, ITAR-TASS reports. The deputy director general of the company "Resorts
of the North Caucasus", Yuri Tyrtyshov, said that "in order for the
North Caucasus tourism cluster to work fully, it is necessary to
reconstruct the existing airports in the North Caucasus Federal
District: I am talking about the airports in Makhachkala, Nalchik,
Krasnodar, Maikop, Vladikavkaz and Mineralnye Vody." In addition, he
said, "we need to think seriously about the construction of modern
airports in Derbent, Matlase (mountain resort of Dagestan) and
Karachaevo-Cherkessia on the principles of public-private
partnership."
At the same time Tartysh stressed that "the construction of airports
will be seen not only in terms of tourism, but, of course, in terms of
other functions, including strengthening the defense capacity of the
country and creating a good traffic flow." "The modernization of the
transport system is a serious global challenge that will change the
social and economic situation in the region," - he said.
The first deputy general director of the RNC noted that more than 12 million
tourists go abroad annually. Tartyshev said that the main objective is
to attract tourists to the North Caucasus.
