The confrontation between the government and the armed opposition in Syria which began on 15 March 2011 took more than 70,000 lives. The war caused enormous damage to the economy and infrastructure of major cities. Millions of Syrians have fled their homes, more than a million of them fled to neighboring countries. Further bloodshed is fraught with the risk of the collapse of the Syrian government and society and threatens the security of the entire region.
