Demographic situation in the CIS countries

On July 11, the United Nations celebrates World Population Day. The day before that date, a Yerevan-Moscow-Kiev-Chisinau-Astana teleconference was held in Moscow: "The demographic situation in the CIS countries: common challenges and private problems".

And there are lots of problems: according to studies, demographic processes in post-Soviet countries are disappointing: fertility decline, signs of depopulation, and as a consequence, the aging of society. According to the UN, the population of the CIS, with the exception of Kazakhstan, in 2050 will be significantly reduced. The experts discussed ways to reverse this trend.

The short-term population growth in recent years is called a "gift of the past", it is the result of the good policy of 1980s. But the short "golden age" has ended.

The general demographic history of the CIS countries still affects the situation, not only for the better.

Now the total population of the five countries is 202 million people - that's more than 3% of the world's population. Demographic trends are also common.
