Ethno-religious threats in the Volga region

On August 26 a meeting of the commission on the harmonization of interethnic and interfaith relations took place in the Public Chamber. During the event, a collection of articles dedicated to ethno-religious threats in the Volga region was presented. The collection includes speeches of public figures, representatives of the clergy and scholarly papers given at a conference held in late 2013 in Saransk. The threat of increasing separatist sentiments among ethnic groups and peoples living in the region, ethnic conflicts, the increase of the influence of supporters of radical Islamic movements and the transformation of the local population into a human resource for Syrian and Iraqi terrorists are the main challenges faced by Russian society. However, the members of the commission believe that the leadership of the country has learned the lessons of the 1990s, and that there will be no repetition of these events.
