World Press on Iran, Turkey and the Caucasus (June 8, 2011)

The Washington Post published an article headlined “Iran to move its most sensitive nuclear equipment to bunker”. The author of the article reports that Iran is moving production of higher-enriched uranium to a mountain bunker, where it aims to triple output by using more advanced centrifuges. According to him, that’s Iranian response to the statement by by Yukiya Amano, the director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, who expressed concern about the possible military dimensions of the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program.

The Jerusalem Post published an article entitled 'Iran sends submarines for reconnaissance in Red Sea'. The official goal of the mission was to combat Somali pirates. However, Israel called it a “provocation”. Still, the Iranian party insists that the mission was one of "peace and friendship", the author notes.


Hurriyet published an article by Mustafa Akyol headlined “The nightmare of the generals”. The author tells the story of his friend, a young Turkish lady, whose father is a general imprisoned for reportedly preparing a military coup. Even though Akyol believes his friend’s father is innocent, he admits that the military made a lot of bad things. He thinks that the generals should deliver a “mea culpa speech” and apologize to the nation for the inconvenience they caused.


The same topic is discussed in an article entitled “The most important event in our recent history” published by the same agency. The article is devoted to the 1980 coup by General Kenan Evren. according to the author of the article, Mehmet Ali Birand, the present-day attitude to the event shows that Turkish society pays no attention to its past as the agenda changes each day.
