World press on human rights in Iran and Kurdish problem (April 26, 2012)

The Guardian published an article on the current situation surrounding human rights in Iran. The author of the article,
Saeed Kamali Dehghan, informs that Iran has recently arrested another human rights activist, Narges Mohammadi. "An ailing human rights activist whose contribution to the campaign against juvenile executions in Iran is internationally recognised has been arrested to serve her six-year prison term," tha article reads. "Last month an appeal court in Tehran reduced Mohammadi's earlier 11-year jail sentence to six years after finding her guilty on charges of spreading propaganda against the ruling system, acting against national security and membership of Iran's Defenders of Human Rights Centre (DHRC)," tha author says. "As the deputy head of the DHRC, the 39-year-old activist and journalist was a close colleague of the Nobel peace laureate Shirin Ebadi who presided over the organisation," the article reads.

Hurriyet published an article by Ruşen Çakır devoted to possible formation of an independent Kurdish state. "The division of Iraq, and in parallel with this, the possibility of the formation of an independent Kurdish state, is increasing every day," the author believes. "The Kurds, who have been defined all along as a population without a state, will finally have an independent state and this will undoubtedly be a historic development. For just this reason, it will be difficult and problematic as well," the article reads. "The declaration of an independent Kurdistan in Iraq will be a historic development likely to change the equilibrium entirely in our country and our region. It is certain that states and regimes that are able to harmonize with the new situation will gain in strength, while those that cannot will be eliminated. In the end, we are facing a tough situation, in which risks and opportunities for everyone exist together," the author concludes.
