World Press on Civil War in Syria (April 16, 2013)

Le Figaro published an article devoted to the Syrian crisis. The author of the article, Isabelle Lasserre, cites the Bristish military and UN diplomats as saying that there is some evidence that chemical weapons are being used in Syria. However, the international community remains silent and seems reluctant to use this argument in order to start an intervention, the author underlines.

According to the author, the reason is that the international powers are not certain which party has used the weapons of mass destruction. "Since last month the regime and the rebels have been accusing each other of using chemical weapons," the article reads.

Another reason is that the use of chemical weapons is not large-scale enough to cause an immediate international outcry and lead to foreign intervention, the author believes.

According to Lasserre, the international community doesn't really want to interfere in the Syrian conflict and this explains this suprising silence.
