Neue Zürcher Zeitung published an article by Daniel Wechlin devoted to the struggle within the Georgian political elite. The author quotes President Mikheil Saakashvili as saying that the Georgian political system is demonstrating the first signs of an authoritarian regime.
The president also says that the ruling coalition wants nothing but revenge, obviously bearing in mind the recent arrests of the secretary general of the president's United National Movement party, Vano Merabishvili, and the governor of Kakhetia, Zurab Chiaberashvili, the author of the article notes.
These arrests were the culmination of a campaign launched by the Georgian Dream coalition against the associates of President Saakashvili, Wechlin believes.
President Saakashvili says the arrests are simply political persecution, the author notes. He also underlines that Vano Merabishvili was expected to run for the presidency in October.
