World press on Georgian presidential elections (October 30, 2013)

Tagesspiegel published an article devoted to the recently-held presidential elections in Georgia and headlined "Ein Schritt in Richtung Demokratie" ("A Step towards True Democracy").

"After the victory of the ruling coalition's candidate at the Georgian presidential elections, Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili achieved full control over the political situation in the country. Thus the era of Mikheil Saakashvili, which started 10 years ago when the Rose Revolution took place, has ended," the article reads.

The authors of the article note that both Russia and the European Union have already congratuled the country on the democratic change of power. According to Dalia Grybauskaitė, the President of Lithuania, which is now the chair of the European Union, Georgia has successfully passed an examination in democracy.

"The newly-elected president will carry mainly ceremonial duties, as most of the power, according to the recent constitutional amendments, is now exercised by the prime minister," the article reads.
